About Soundindex
Thurston Moore's 350 Best Records of 2025
"These are definitely the best ones I heard. […] It’s amazing how much good music is being released outside the mainstream the last few years, experimental or otherwise […]"
– Thurston Moore (commenting on the list on which he included ‘Of Delusions’ by Eloine + Ypsmael, produced via NM Soundindex, released on the Chocolate Monk label)
Hörspielwiese Köln Award Ceremony 2022
"Opulent, raw, almost physical, a tour de force [...]. Sound composition that creates powerful images."
– Kiron Patka, Eva Solloch and Sebastian Hocke (award jury critique on 'Dein und mein Wald', text and concept by Dominik Irtenkauf; composition, sound design, production by SmaelyP via NM Soundindex)
NM Soundindex is the sound art, design, production studio and workshop of Norman I. Mueller. He transforms texts by Berlin-based author Dominik Irtenkauf into audio drama, which aired under his moniker SmaelyP at festivals in Santiago de Chile, The Hague, Glasgow, and Cologne. Since 2010, his solo and collaborative work under the Ypsmael project spans sound collage, minimalist drone music and noisy electroacoustic improvisation, which he has performed and exhibited across the USA, UK and Europe. Following an MA in Music Design from Furtwangen University (2018 - 2021) he worked four years as academic staff in musicological research and degree programme development (Master of Music in Composition) at Trossingen University of Music's State Centre for Music-Design-Performance (2022 - 2025).

Reviews
"My short residency at Soundindex was extremely fruitful, as we were finally able to work together in person on our ongoing collaborative project. To have a few days to discuss and share our ideas, and then to have the studio space to make work, has been essential at this stage of the project. The space is private and comfortable, central to Meersburg old town. I can't wait to be back for another period of collaborative work."
– Simon Whetham, May 2024
"Above the rooftops of Meersburg, with an elevator almost to the top, the special atmosphere in the Soundindex Studio can be felt with the first step over the threshold. An experience of creative freedom, competent and empathic recording and mix engineering, coffee enjoyment at its best, peaceful atmosphere and concentration, interpersonal and musical experiences with host Norman Mueller and the 'band'."
– Elisabeth Haselberger, October 2024
"Wonderfully intensive recording weekend at Soundindex in Meersburg's old town with technically skilled support and creative artistic presence from NM himself. Will be glad to return..."
– Peter Schubert, October 2024
"The Soundindex Studio is not only an eye-catcher in terms of space but also very well staffed. Norman helped our ensemble to creatively let off steam with his technical, human and caffeinated competence and also personally made his sonic contribution. Anyone who needs a creative break between sessions will be treated to a wonderful old town backdrop, which is also just a stone's throw away from the lake. On the way there? Culinary delicacies as far as the eye can see."
– Andreas Usenbenz, October 2024
"Our spontaneously formed ensemble received outstanding support from Soundindex Studio, not only in audio engineering, recording and improvisation. From good conversation, beautiful landscapes, cozy rooms, pastries, coffee and drinks, nothing was missing on the magical weekend at the Lake Constance village. I will remember this for a long time..."
– Josef Haeusel, October 2024
"I have been working together with Norman since his tour of US West Coast in April 2018, when I arranged an event for a downtown San Francisco concert series at Canessa Gallery. I invited him to perform on the second of three consecutive nights he played in the city. He performed a compelling solo set spanning electroacoustic collage and free improvisation with live electronics, which was very well-received both among the audience as well as the staff. He turned out to be a convincing addition to our event’s line-up of Boston-based violinist Morgan Evans-Weiler, local duo Bodil and Larnie Fox, and a quartet of Theresa Wong, Kanoko Nishi-Smith, Tom Djll and Jacob Felix Heule. This was followed by various collaborative recordings over the years, including a grant from the German StiftungErlebnisKunst enabling a joint residency project, collaborative performance and hosting an invented instrument building workshop at Global Forest Kunstverein, St. Georgen, all of which he had organized. During 2020, he joined me for a full-time remote work placement at my record label, while finishing his postgraduate studies. This included long-distance collaboration on a music / sound art release on the label, including all steps from start to finish, as well as supporting and managing many of the label’s day-to-day routines, such as:
-
Ideation, with using improvisation and a variety of techniques to collect material,
-
Conceptualizing and developing musical passages, sonic structures and textures,
-
Recording and arranging sounds,
-
Mixing and mastering,
-
Graphic and textual design,
-
Procurement and production,
-
EU press relations, scouting for new marketing and sales channels,
-
Import and distribution planning and order processing,
-
Networking, business development, PR and customer care.
